Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has explained that his decision to grant a pardon to Sunday Jackson was based on the inmate’s sustained good behaviour while in custody.
The governor made this known through a statement issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou.
Sunday Jackson had been sentenced to death and detained at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre after a violent confrontation that resulted in the death of Ardo Bawuro. According to the governor, the incident occurred when Jackson resisted an attack and acted in self-defence.
Governor Fintiri said Jackson was among three inmates granted a full pardon. The others include Joseph Eugene, held at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Yola New, and Maxwell Ibrahim, who is serving his sentence at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kaduna.
In addition, the governor approved the remission of the remaining prison terms of five other inmates: Joshua James Audo, Adamu Ibrahim, Mohammed Abubakar, Ibrahim Usman, and Saidu Abubakar. These individuals are currently serving sentences at custodial centres in Numan and Jada.
According to the statement, the decision followed recommendations from the Adamawa State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. The governor noted that all the beneficiaries had shown clear signs of rehabilitation and improved conduct during their incarceration.
Governor Fintiri stated that the action was taken in line with constitutional provisions and reflected the state government’s commitment to justice, reform, and reintegration of reformed inmates into society.
