Nigerian troops under Operation Hadin Kai successfully prevented a large-scale abduction attempt by Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Borno State, rescuing over 150 civilians.

The operation took place on Monday as soldiers were escorting a convoy of travellers when they came under attack. According to a statement by the Northeast Joint Task Force spokesperson, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the insurgents had planned to abduct dozens of people, including men, women, and children, using about 17 vehicles.

Troops quickly engaged the attackers while surveillance teams identified the unfolding kidnapping attempt. Reinforcements from the Quick Reaction Force were immediately deployed, leading to a coordinated counterattack that forced the terrorists to retreat.

Under sustained pressure from the military, the insurgents abandoned both their captives and vehicles, effectively ending the abduction attempt. All rescued civilians were safely moved to Buratai for onward reunification with their families.

During the pursuit of the fleeing attackers, soldiers encountered an improvised explosive device along the Bula Zarma–Mangari route. The explosion left five personnel seriously injured, and they were promptly evacuated for advanced medical treatment.

The military described the operation as a reflection of its vigilance, rapid response capability, and continued commitment to protecting civilians in the Northeast. Authorities also reassured residents of ongoing efforts to maintain security and intensify operations against terrorist groups in the region.
