Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnanu, widely known for her popular song “Omije Oju Mi,” is set to be laid to rest on Thursday at the Atan Cemetery in Yaba, Lagos. She will be buried in an open grave beside the late Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Allwell Ademola, who passed away recently.
Family members, friends, and admirers have been invited to gather to celebrate her life and honour her memory. Her family recently released an updated burial schedule after earlier plans were suspended following concerns over the circumstances surrounding her death.
Relatives disclosed that they initially believed her death was unusual and required deeper clarification before proceeding with burial arrangements. As a result, they cancelled previous plans and focused on prayers, spiritual consultations, and other steps to better understand the situation. The family also insisted that her burial should not be rushed, stressing that she deserved a dignified farewell.
The delay reportedly caused disagreements with some of her friends and colleagues who had already set up a burial committee and announced dates without full consultation with the family. This lack of coordination contributed to tensions and changes in the initial plans.
Earlier arrangements included a multi-day programme featuring a service of songs, a candlelight procession, a tribute night, and a private interment for close family members and associates. However, those plans were later scrapped.
