The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, identified as Ididiong James, over allegations of assaulting his mother and possessing an illegal firearm.
According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on January 25, 2026, in Panshekara Quarters, Kano. Police officers attached to the Panshekara Division responded to a distress call and arrived at the residence to find that the suspect had reportedly attacked his mother. However, he escaped before officers could apprehend him.
The victim later submitted an English Beretta pistol loaded with eight rounds of ammunition, which she said she found in her son’s bag. She told the police that she refused to return the weapon to him, which allegedly led to the violent confrontation. She also expressed concern about a noticeable change in her son’s behaviour since returning from a New Year celebration.
Police later tracked down and arrested the suspect, who is currently in custody as investigations continue.
Commending the woman’s bravery, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, praised her for cooperating with law enforcement and standing up against violence. He also urged parents and guardians to monitor their children’s activities closely and report any suspicious behaviour to security agencies.
The police command further advised residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
