The Benue State Police Command has confirmed that four suspected bandits were killed during a security operation in Orokam, Ogbadibo Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police spokesperson, Udeme Edet, the incident occurred on Thursday when operatives of the Operation Zenda Joint Task Force were conducting a routine stop-and-search at a checkpoint in the community. The officers intercepted a black Golf 3 vehicle, but the occupants reportedly resisted the search.
Edet stated that two of the suspects opened fire on the officers with AK-47 rifles in an attempt to escape. The police personnel responded to the attack, leading to a gun battle that resulted in the death of four armed suspects, while another suspect managed to flee into a nearby bush.
Items recovered from the scene included an AK-47 rifle, a magazine containing 15 rounds of ammunition, the suspects’ vehicle, and objects believed to be criminal charms. The police said efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest the fleeing suspect, while investigations into the incident continue.
The Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, commended the operatives for their bravery and professionalism, assuring residents that the command remains committed to combating armed criminal activities in the state. He also urged the public to remain law-abiding and provide useful information to security agencies.
