Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ex-Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has said Nigeria is fortunate to have President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its leader, describing him as a true politician with deep commitment to national unity.
Ganduje stated that the North would strongly support Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, insisting that there is no viable alternative candidate from the South who commands similar political experience and acceptance in the region.
He made the remarks on Friday in Abuja while receiving a delegation of Northern Nigeria Youth Leaders from all 19 northern states, who paid him a courtesy visit and formally honoured him as the group’s patron.
Responding to claims that the current administration favours the South over the North, Ganduje dismissed the narrative, stressing that such arguments were misleading and politically motivated. He noted that President Tinubu has repeatedly shown evidence that appointments under his administration cut across all regions of the country.
According to Ganduje, those expecting the North to abandon Tinubu in 2027 are mistaken. He described Tinubu as a leader whose entire life has been shaped by politics and democratic struggle, including periods of exile during Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.
“This is the first time Nigeria is lucky to have a politician as President,” Ganduje said. “Politics is his constituency. He believes deeply in the unity of Nigeria and paid personal sacrifices for democracy to thrive. There is simply no better option for 2027.”
The former APC chairman recalled that it was agreed even before the election of the late President Muhammadu Buhari that power would return to the South after Buhari’s eight-year tenure.
He praised Tinubu’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, describing the decision as bold and necessary despite its political risks. Ganduje noted that while previous administrations and presidential candidates promised to end the subsidy, Tinubu was the first to act decisively.
He explained that the policy has increased funds available to state governments, regardless of party affiliation, enabling more development at the sub-national level.
“President Tinubu did not remove subsidy to favour any political group. He did it for the country, and today governors are benefiting from improved revenues,” he said.
Ganduje also commended the Northern Nigeria Youth Leaders for their commitment to Tinubu’s re-election, applauding their efforts to mobilise support and raise funds for his nomination ahead of the 2027 polls.
Earlier, the group’s National Leader, Murtala Gamji, said the youths were united in backing Tinubu’s second-term bid, dismissing claims that the North would vote against him.
Gamji credited Ganduje’s mentorship for his emergence as a prominent youth leader and assured that northern youths would massively mobilise votes in support of Tinubu across the region.
He added that no southern leader has supported northern youths as much as President Tinubu, insisting that the narrative of northern opposition to his re-election was false.
