Barely months after officials announced a controversial peace agreement with bandits in Katsina State, suspected terrorists have again attacked Doma village in Faskari Local Government Area, leaving at least 23 people dead and many others injured.
The attackers reportedly stormed the community on Tuesday in large numbers, firing gunshots repeatedly as residents fled for safety. Witnesses said the assailants moved from house to house, shooting indiscriminately and setting several homes on fire.
Sources also revealed that vehicles were burnt during the invasion, while many residents sustained gunshot wounds. Some villagers are still missing, as families continue searching for their loved ones.
A security monitoring platform, Bakatsine, confirmed that at least 23 men were killed in the attack. The platform noted that Faskari is one of the local government areas where authorities had earlier claimed a peace deal had been reached with bandit groups operating in the area.
The latest violence has sparked renewed fear among residents, especially as the attack occurred despite a reported surrender agreement and peace arrangement meant to stop hostilities and encourage displaced persons to return home.
