A 17-year-old Senior Secondary School 3 student of Government Science and Technical College, Potiskum, Yobe State, Hassan Ahmadu, has reportedly died after being assaulted by some of his classmates in an alleged bullying incident.
The incident occurred on Sunday at the school located in Potiskum Local Government Area.
A family source disclosed that the deceased was buried the same day in his hometown, Gadaka, in Fika Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered that Hassan had been attacked by fellow students, although the exact circumstances surrounding the assault have not yet been officially clarified.
Confirming the development, the Yobe State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the police had commenced investigations to determine what led to the student’s death.
“We are aware of the incident, and investigation is ongoing to ascertain what caused the death of the student,” Abdulkarim said.
A teacher at the school, who spoke anonymously, revealed that the deceased had reportedly been a victim of bullying for some time.
According to the teacher, Hassan had pleaded with the students involved to stop the harassment, but they allegedly ignored him and attacked him.
“He asked them to stop but they refused. They beat him severely and he later died. The entire school was shocked,” the teacher said.
The teacher added that the school authorities had handed over the students suspected to be involved in the incident to the police for further investigation.
Meanwhile, efforts to reach the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Abba Idriss Adam, were unsuccessful as he said he would respond later.
