A tragic road crash along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway in Lagos has claimed the life of a man, while his wife was left critically injured after their vehicle was crushed by a granite-laden truck.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Eleko Junction when an articulated truck reportedly suffered brake failure while speeding from the Epe axis toward Eleko. The driver allegedly lost control, veered off his lane and collided with a Toyota saloon car travelling from Ajah toward Epe before the truck overturned onto the smaller vehicle.

The spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said the impact trapped the couple inside the wreckage, leaving the car completely flattened under the weight of the truck.

LASTMA officials, working alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and nearby residents, rescued the victims. However, the man was confirmed dead at the scene, while his wife, who sat in the front passenger seat, sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a hospital for urgent treatment.

Taofiq added that the truck driver fled immediately after the incident.

Reacting to the development, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as a painful and avoidable tragedy. He expressed condolences to the victim’s family and wished the injured woman a quick recovery.

Bakare-Oki also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws, particularly against speeding, reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance.

Road accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles have continued to occur frequently along the Lekki–Ajah and Lekki–Epe corridors, with many attributed to mechanical faults, overspeeding and increasing traffic pressure in the area.
