President Bola Tinubu has criticised opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting he will not relinquish leadership to political rivals regardless of their campaigns.
Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with the Renewed Hope Ambassadors led by Hope Uzodimma, the president said those presenting themselves as alternatives have previously failed Nigerians in positions of authority.
Although he did not mention any individual directly, his comments were widely seen as targeting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who has recently aligned with opposition leaders under the African Democratic Congress.
Drivetvnews gathered that Tinubu questioned the track record of past leaders involved in economic reforms, particularly referencing the privatisation programme carried out during the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo, where Atiku played a key role as head of the National Council on Privatisation.
He argued that several assets sold during that period have not delivered expected results, citing the steel sector and the Ajaokuta Steel Company as examples of underperforming investments.
According to the president, these outcomes raise concerns about the credibility of those now positioning themselves as agents of change.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to governance, assuring supporters that he remains focused despite criticism from opposition parties. Tinubu encouraged members of his political base to strengthen grassroots mobilisation and maintain unity ahead of future elections.
The president acknowledged the challenges he faced during both party primaries and the general election, describing the process as difficult but ultimately successful.
Meanwhile, Atiku, who served as vice president from 1999 to 2007, remains a prominent figure within the opposition and is widely considered a potential contender in the next presidential race.
