Festus Keyamo has reacted to Peter Obi’s departure from the African Democratic Congress, comparing the situation to a man losing a valued partner because he failed to commit to her.
Speaking on Thursday, Keyamo used a romantic analogy to criticise the ADC over Obi’s exit to the New Democratic Congress. According to him, the party treated Obi like a “side-chick” instead of giving him assurance of leadership within the party.
In his statement, Keyamo described a scenario where a bachelor admires a woman but refuses to make her his first choice, only for her to leave for someone who values her properly. He said the ADC’s handling of Obi reflected the same behaviour.
Obi officially resigned from the ADC on Saturday, citing persistent internal disputes and legal challenges within the party. He explained that the decision followed careful reflection and concern about Nigeria’s political future.
The former Anambra governor also linked his exit to similar issues that affected his time in the Labour Party, accusing political forces of fueling internal crises to weaken opposition movements ahead of elections.
Despite leaving the party, Obi appreciated the ADC leadership, including former Senate President David Mark, as well as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, for their support.
His departure, alongside that of former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, reportedly triggered the defection of 18 lawmakers to the NDC.
