The Nigeria Customs Service has launched disciplinary proceedings against one of its officers after a viral video allegedly showed him demanding a bribe from a motorist along the Lagos-Benin Expressway.
In a video shared on the agency’s official X account, the unidentified officer was publicly paraded before being handed over to the Customs Police Unit for further investigation.
The Customs Service described the incident as unprofessional conduct and reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance against corruption and misconduct among personnel.
Speaking during the parade, Controller of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Lagos, CSC Hussaini Abdullahi, said any officer found guilty of violating ethical standards would face appropriate sanctions without compromise.
The viral recording reportedly captured the officer demanding as much as N200,000 from a motorist over alleged outstanding vehicle document payments dating back to 2018.
The motorist, who secretly recorded the encounter using AI Meta glasses, questioned the demand after the officer allegedly suggested he should “go and bring 200” to settle the issue.
The incident has sparked renewed public criticism over alleged extortion and questionable operations by Customs officers on Nigerian highways, particularly involving already-cleared vehicles and goods.
The Nigeria Customs Service said investigations into the matter are ongoing.
