A suspected serial killer identified as Akaninyene has been arrested in Creektown Forest, Cross River State, after allegedly confessing to the murder of about 30 people.
Drivetvnews gathered that the suspect was apprehended by military and tactical police operatives following intelligence reports that led security forces to a secluded hut he reportedly built inside the Abanyama area of Ukim Ita Community in Odukpani Local Government Area.
According to security sources, Akaninyene attempted to flee when operatives arrived but was quickly overpowered and taken into custody.
A search of the forest compound allegedly uncovered multiple shallow graves. Authorities reportedly exhumed several burial pits containing decomposing headless bodies concealed beneath plantain crops.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted to killing numerous victims who had previously been reported missing in the community. He also reportedly implicated a woman, claiming she assisted by luring victims to the hideout and restraining them during attacks.
The operation followed reports of missing persons and the most recent alleged killing on May 26, which prompted intensified investigations by community leaders and security agencies.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the arrest. Police spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah said the matter remains under active investigation and that further details would be released as inquiries continue.
Community leaders and residents have commended security operatives for the arrest and have intensified searches in nearby forest areas for possible additional evidence or victims.
