A prominent Islamic cleric, Alfa Iliasu, has died following an attack by armed assailants at his residence in Ilesha-Baruba, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, sparked tension across the community as residents mourned the death of the respected religious leader and called for justice.
According to local sources, the attackers invaded the cleric’s home and inflicted serious injuries on him during the assault. He was rushed to a medical facility for treatment but was later confirmed dead.
The attack triggered widespread anger among residents, leading to unrest in parts of the community. One of the suspects linked to the incident was reportedly apprehended by residents and later died during the ensuing mob action, while another suspect was arrested by security operatives. A third suspect is said to have escaped and remains at large.
Community members described Alfa Iliasu as a well-known Islamic scholar whose influence extended beyond Ilesha-Baruba to neighbouring communities. His death has generated grief among residents, many of whom regarded him as a respected religious and community figure.
The cleric was buried at the Ilesha-Baruba Muslim Cemetery in accordance with Islamic rites.
Security agencies have yet to release an official statement on the incident. However, efforts are reportedly ongoing to investigate the attack and apprehend any remaining suspects connected to the case.
Residents have appealed for calm while authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
