A Middle Belt-based group, the New Nigeria Integrity Movement (NMIM), has appealed to former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to consider a return to national leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The call was made in a communiqué issued after a strategic meeting where members assessed the country’s current situation. The group expressed concern over growing insecurity, worsening economic conditions, and the declining standard of living across many parts of the country, especially in the Middle Belt.

In a statement jointly signed by its National Leader, Hon. Pastor Peter Hassan, and Secretary, Dr. Blessing Eliagu, the group described Nigeria as being at a critical point, with widespread poverty, hunger, and insecurity affecting millions of citizens.

According to the communiqué, many Nigerians are facing severe economic hardship, with families struggling daily to meet basic needs. While acknowledging the importance of infrastructure development for long-term progress, the group stressed that such efforts do not immediately address the urgent issues of hunger and livelihoods.

The organisation urged Jonathan to bring his experience and leadership back into service, describing him as a calm and credible figure capable of restoring public trust and addressing the country’s economic challenges.

It also called on democratic stakeholders, both within and outside Nigeria, to support efforts aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring national stability.

The group further praised Jonathan’s past leadership, noting his commitment to democratic values, rule of law, and national unity during his time in office. It added that his return could help reinforce power rotation, which it said remains vital for maintaining political balance in the country.

The movement emphasised that its appeal is not driven by partisan interests but by concern for the wellbeing of Nigerians. It concluded by urging citizens to continue advocating peacefully for responsible leadership and policies that prioritise the welfare of the people.
