A High Court in Calabar has sentenced 46-year-old Imeh Sunday to life imprisonment for sexually abusing his daughter.
Reports gathered by Drivetvnews indicates that the case was prosecuted by the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, an organisation dedicated to protecting vulnerable individuals. Delivering judgment, Justice Blessing Egwu of Family Court 2 in Cross River State ruled that the prosecution had proven the allegations beyond reasonable doubt, citing strong and convincing evidence against the defendant. The court subsequently imposed the maximum penalty allowed by law.
Reacting to the verdict, the organisation’s lead counsel, James Ibor, praised the survivor for her bravery and perseverance throughout the trial. He also acknowledged the support provided by her guardians, the state Ministry of Justice, the police, and others involved in securing justice.
According to the group, this conviction marks the fourth successful rape-related case it has handled in the state within the last four months.
In a related development, the Nigeria Police Force in Bauchi State previously arrested a 28-year-old man over allegations of assault, intimidation, and the sexual abuse of his eight-year-old daughter. The incident was reported to authorities, prompting an investigation into the case.
