The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on Christians and Muslims across the country to resist attempts by politicians to exploit religious differences for political gain ahead of the 2027 general elections.
CAN made the appeal in its message marking this year’s Eid-el-Maulud celebration, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad and encourages reflection on values such as mercy, justice, compassion, honesty and peaceful coexistence.
In a statement signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association said these values remain particularly important in Nigeria at a time when citizens are facing economic hardship, insecurity and other challenges.
The association urged Nigerians to care for one another, protect human dignity and promote peace despite differences that may be exploited for political or personal interests.
“This celebration comes at a difficult time for many Nigerians. The pressure of rising living costs and insecurity is being felt in homes and communities across the country. People are tired of promises; they want to see their lives improve,” CAN said.
The organisation also called on the Federal Government and other leaders to move beyond promises and deliver tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.
According to CAN, Nigerians need improved security, economic relief and leadership that prioritises their welfare.
The association stressed that true leadership should be measured by the practical impact citizens experience rather than promises made by politicians.
As the 2027 elections approach, CAN cautioned political actors against using religion or ethnicity to gain electoral advantage.
“Elections will come and go, but the bonds that hold Nigeria together must remain,” the association stated.
CAN further urged Christians and Muslims to reject efforts to create division between them, stressing that both groups have a shared responsibility to protect their communities, assist vulnerable people and promote peaceful coexistence.
The association said it remained hopeful about Nigeria’s future but noted that such hope must be supported by responsible leadership, justice, good citizenship and concrete action.
CAN prayed that the Eid-el-Maulud celebration would renew Nigerians’ commitment to mercy, peace and compassion and inspire efforts towards building a country where every citizen can live with dignity and hope.
