The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Oyo State has criticised Governor Seyi Makinde over Friday’s attack on communities in Oriire Local Government Area, accusing his administration of failing to adequately protect residents from growing insecurity.
Drivetvnews gathered this in a statement issued in Ibadan by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC condemned the attack carried out by suspected bandits and expressed sympathy to the families of the victims killed during the incident.
The party also called on security agencies and the government to ensure the immediate rescue of the abducted schoolchildren and a headteacher identified as Mrs Folawe Alamu.
Gunmen riding motorcycles reportedly invaded Yawota and Ahoro Esinele communities on Friday morning, killing two residents and abducting several pupils alongside the school headteacher.
Reacting to the incident, the APC described the attacks as evidence of failure by the state government to tackle insecurity in parts of Oyo State.
According to the party, several local government areas including Oriire, Ibarapa North, Oluyole, Itesiwaju and Ido have repeatedly witnessed attacks by armed men who kill, injure and abduct innocent residents.
The opposition party further accused Governor Makinde of focusing on political activities in Ibadan while the attacks were ongoing in rural communities.
The APC questioned the effectiveness of the state’s security investments, including surveillance aircraft reportedly purchased by the government, and asked how monthly security allocations were being utilised.
The party urged the governor to work more closely with relevant stakeholders and security agencies to improve safety across the state.
Meanwhile, residents of the affected communities continue to express concern over the rising wave of kidnappings and violent attacks in parts of Oyo State.
