A Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has criticised the Federal Government, alleging that rescue efforts are often prioritised for politically connected individuals while many ordinary Nigerians remain in captivity.
In a statement issued by the group’s Convener, Olusola Badero, and released through its Home Director, Princess Balogun, the organisation expressed concern over the recent rescue of the sister of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and her twin children. While welcoming their safe return, the group questioned why dozens of abducted schoolchildren and teachers have remained in captivity for weeks without similar urgency from authorities.
According to the union, more than 40 schoolchildren and their teachers abducted from Oyo State have reportedly spent over 27 days in captivity. The group also referenced reports of over 170 women and children allegedly being held by kidnappers in parts of Kwara State.
The organisation argued that the successful rescue of the minister’s relatives has strengthened public perceptions that influential Nigerians receive preferential treatment in security operations. It maintained that every citizen deserves equal protection regardless of social status or political connections.
The group also criticised First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, claiming that political engagements should not overshadow efforts to secure the release of kidnapped citizens. It urged the President and relevant authorities to treat the plight of abducted children and teachers as a national emergency.
Furthermore, the organisation called on security agencies to intensify operations aimed at rescuing all victims of kidnapping across the country. It noted that recent security successes in other regions demonstrate that determined efforts can yield positive results.
The union appealed to Nigerians to support leaders who prioritise citizens’ safety and welfare, stressing that government should demonstrate equal commitment to protecting all citizens irrespective of their background.
