Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has said President Bola Tinubu has done his best in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges but argued that his best is no longer enough to tackle the country’s growing problems.
Speaking during an interview with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, Obi agreed with recent remarks by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who said President Tinubu had tried his best on security.
Obi said Adeboye’s assessment was fair, stressing that the real issue is whether the President’s best is sufficient to meet the country’s current security needs.
According to him, effective leadership requires competence, capacity, compassion, commitment, and character. He argued that Nigeria’s worsening security situation demonstrates the need for a change in leadership.
Obi added that President Tinubu has done all he can and should now “go home and rest,” suggesting that the country requires fresh leadership with the capacity to address its challenges.
Earlier, Pastor Adeboye had defended Tinubu against criticism over insecurity, stating that the President had fulfilled his responsibility by giving operational directives to the military and should not be expected to personally lead combat operations.
However, the cleric also expressed concern over the worsening security situation, revealing that he advised the President to issue a 90-day ultimatum to military commanders to end insecurity or resign, while also calling for decisive action against sponsors of terrorism.
