The National Youth Service Corps has announced that employers who fail to provide accommodation and transportation for corps members assigned to their organisations will be barred from participating in the scheme.
Drivetvnews gathered that the announcement was made by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, during an interactive session with corps members in Kogi State, according to a statement released by the scheme on Tuesday.
Nafiu stated that any employer who neglects these welfare obligations would be blacklisted from benefiting from the services of corps members in the future.
He urged organisations to prioritise the welfare of corps members, stressing that providing adequate support would improve their productivity and overall service experience.
The Director-General also reassured corps members of the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding their welfare and security throughout their service year.
He appealed to state governments, local government councils and other stakeholders to strengthen their support for the NYSC scheme.
Nafiu reminded corps members to remain security conscious and promptly report any suspicious activities to the appropriate security agencies, noting that everyone has a role to play in maintaining safety.
He further encouraged them to remain disciplined, committed to their duties and avoid actions capable of tarnishing the image of the NYSC.
The NYSC boss also advised corps members to take the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme seriously, describing it as an opportunity to acquire practical skills and become financially independent.
He encouraged them to identify business opportunities within their host communities and begin generating income during their service year.
Acknowledging the country’s economic challenges, Nafiu urged corps members to cultivate prudent financial habits by managing their resources wisely and developing a savings culture.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator in Kogi, Mrs Tochi Chika Chris-Moneke, commended the Director-General for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare and security of corps members and staff.
She also disclosed plans by the state secretariat to organise a workshop for corps employers and a Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers programme in the coming weeks.
