The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) has announced plans to commence a three-day warning strike across medical schools in Nigeria from Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

Drivetvnews gathered that the association’s Acting National Secretary-General, Prof. Aniekan Peter, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Wednesday.

Peter said the decision followed resolutions reached at the association’s National Emergency Council meeting.

He expressed concern over the growing shortage of medical lecturers and the increasing number of professionals leaving the country under the “Japa syndrome,” accusing the Federal Government of failing to adequately address the concerns of medical academics.

NAMDA argued that the government’s plan to increase the number of medical doctors being trained would be difficult to achieve without first improving the welfare and working conditions of the lecturers responsible for training them.

The association also criticised the government for failing to conclude negotiations on the conditions of service for medical lecturers and formally implement their payment under the CONMESS salary structure.

Other grievances listed by the association include alleged non-payment of the Medical and Clinical Academic Training Allowance (MCATA), Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) and excess workload allowance.

According to NAMDA, the planned industrial action will be total and comprehensive across medical schools nationwide.

“The warning strike is scheduled to commence Tuesday next week and will be total and comprehensive across medical schools in the country,” the statement said.

The association said the planned strike was coming at a time when Nigeria was already facing a serious shortage of medical lecturers, warning that continued government inaction could further worsen the situation.

“At a time when the country is already experiencing a severe shortage of medical lecturers, it is unfortunate that the Government is allowing these avoidable issues to escalate,” NAMDA stated.

The lecturers urged the Federal Government to urgently return to the negotiating table and resolve their outstanding demands before the warning strike begins.
