The United States Mint has released 250,000 $1 coins featuring President Donald Trump as part of celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary.
Drivetvnews gathered that the coins are legal tender and have entered circulation, meaning members of the public could receive them as change during regular transactions.
The front of the coin features Trump’s portrait, designed by US Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna from an official White House photograph. The reverse carries the Presidential Seal, along with the number “250” to commemorate the anniversary.
Despite their gold-like appearance, the coins are made from non-precious metals and are being produced at the Philadelphia Mint.
The Mint is selling the coins in rolls of 25 for $61 and bags of 100 for $154.50. Some special issues carry a “July 4th” mark commemorating the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Demand was reportedly high when the coins were released, forcing the Mint to introduce a virtual waiting room after heavy traffic overwhelmed its website.
The release follows changes to federal law that allow commemorative coins connected to the 250th anniversary to feature a living president. The Trump administration has maintained that congressional approval was not required for the coin.
Other commemorative coins planned for the anniversary include Revolutionary War Quarters, American Eagle Gold Coins and Enduring Liberty Half Dollars.
