President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed grief over the death of veteran Nollywood actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died at the age of 84 on Tuesday.
The President, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Jacobs as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished actors and a major figure in the country’s creative industry.
According to the statement, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before building a successful career in British television and international film. He later returned to Nigeria and became an influential figure in the local film industry.
Tinubu noted that the late actor received several major industry awards for his contributions and was also honoured nationally with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
The President commended Jacobs for his contributions to the growth and professionalisation of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, saying his talent, discipline and dedication inspired generations of actors and filmmakers.
Tinubu also highlighted Jacobs’ ability to portray characters with depth and authenticity, which earned him recognition both in Nigeria and internationally.
The President extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Chief Joke Silva, their children, relatives, colleagues and the wider Nigerian creative community.
He prayed for the repose of the late actor’s soul and described his death as a significant loss to Nigeria, Africa’s film industry and the global performing arts community.
