Oba Francis Alao, the Olugbon of Orile-Igbon in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, has affirmed that traditional rulers do not have authority over religious leaders. This announcement was made through a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday, which was later acquired by Drivetvnews.

The Olugbon’s statement comes shortly after the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Olaoye, appointed Habib Ayilara as the palace Imam. This appointment has sparked considerable debate. According to Drivetvnews, the controversy surrounding Ayilara’s appointment is related to an ongoing dispute between the traditional ruler and the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Sheik Teliat Yunus Ayilara.

In his statement, Alao advised traditional rulers to avoid interfering in religious affairs, stressing that they lack authority over religious leaders. As the Vice Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Alao emphasized that Sheik Yunus Ayilara continues to hold his position as the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso.

Alao clarified that traditional rulers’ roles regarding religious groups are purely advisory. He pointed out that only the government has the legal authority to remove a properly appointed religious leader, and such a decision must adhere to constitutional procedures.

Responding to the criticism from the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) about the appointment of Ayilara, Alao assured that stakeholders in Ogbomoso are working to prevent any division within the Muslim community. He highlighted that the matter is currently under legal review, which means that Sheik Ayilara remains the Chief Imam unless a court rules otherwise. Alao called on those fueling division to stop, warning that they might face repercussions.

The Olugbon reiterated his support for Sheik Teliat Yunus Ayilara and assured MURIC and other concerned parties that there is no need for concern, as the situation is being handled appropriately and local stakeholders are in support of the Chief Imam.
