The Lagos State Police Command has cleared Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal of theft allegations, finding no evidence to support claims she stole gold at Oba Akintoye Market. Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin stated the accusations resulted from a misunderstanding, specifically an incorrect account number provided by the seller ¹.
Anjorin-Lawal transferred ₦90,000 to the wrong account, but later transferred the funds again to the correct account, demonstrating her intention was not to steal. The individuals accusing her acknowledged their mistake during police questioning.
The incident led to Anjorin-Lawal’s assault by traders, captured in a viral video. Six traders – Qudus Jokogbola, Suru Olawale, Edu Shakirat, Fausat Mohammed, Kafayat Ahmed and Opere Simiat Morenike – were charged with assault and blackmail. Prosecutor Sola Samuel alleged they conspired to commit the crime, causing bodily harm and disrupting public order.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to charges under Sections 411, 413, 168(d) and 170(b) of Lagos State’s 2015 Criminal Laws. Magistrate A.A. Paul granted bail at ₦200,000 each, requiring a Lagos resident surety with tax payment proof. Defendants remain in Nigerian Correctional Services custody until bail conditions are met.
