The Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has postponed ruling on a divorce petition filed by a man named Alabi against his wife, Aishat. Alabi alleged that his wife was disobedient, verbally abusive, and once threatened to attack him with acid.

In his testimony, Alabi told the court that Aishat routinely ignored his instructions and disrespected his authority at home. He described her as verbally aggressive, claiming she frequently hurled insults and curses at him. According to him, their relationship turned sour shortly after they began living together, despite having paid her bride price.

He further stated that he was forced to leave their home due to safety concerns, following her alleged threat to pour acid on him. He pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage and grant him custody of their only child, adding that he would be responsible for the child’s welfare. He also sought a restraining order to prevent Aishat from harassing or interfering in his personal life.

Aishat, however, denied all allegations but agreed that the marriage should be dissolved. She recounted that Alabi became controlling and oppressive after they moved in together. She claimed he forced her to cover herself completely when leaving the house, a condition she strongly opposed.

Contrary to Alabi’s statement, Aishat said he never paid her bride price and that their union was never formalized through a wedding or family involvement. She accused him of being domineering and unwilling to allow her freedom of expression. Aishat told the court that Alabi abandoned her and their children and had not contributed to their welfare since.

She opposed his request for custody, asserting that she had been solely responsible for feeding and educating the children through her business. She urged the court to grant her full custody of the children.

After listening to both parties, the presiding judge, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case to a later date for judgment.
