The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), identified as Onoja Samuel, for allegedly firing gunshots into the air at a market in Kubwa, Abuja.
The police also recovered a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition from the suspect during the arrest.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, explaining that the incident occurred on October 25, 2026, at about 1:50 p.m.
According to the statement, the police received a distress call reporting that an unidentified man armed with a pistol was shooting sporadically into the air at the market.
Following the report, operatives attached to the Kubwa Police Division were immediately deployed to the scene. The officers subsequently disarmed and arrested the suspect.
Preliminary investigations identified the suspect as Onoja Samuel, a Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the NSCDC.
The police said the officer allegedly went to the market with a pistol after receiving information that some traders had assaulted his wife.
An argument reportedly broke out between him and the traders, during which he allegedly fired several shots into the air.
“During the arrest, a CZ pistol and seventeen (17) rounds of live 9mm ammunition were recovered from the suspect,” the statement said.
The police confirmed that the suspect remained in custody and would be charged to court after investigations were concluded.
Police Call for Cooperation Among Security Agencies
Following the incident, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, urged personnel of other security agencies operating in the territory to exercise restraint and maintain proper coordination with the police.
Sanusi advised officers from other security agencies who intend to conduct authorised operations within the FCT to notify the police divisions responsible for the areas concerned.
According to the police command, the measure is aimed at improving cooperation among security agencies and preventing avoidable confrontations.
The command reiterated the importance of coordination among security personnel in maintaining law and order across the Federal Capital Territory.
