The Olu of Kemta Orile in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba Adetokunbo Tejuosho, has openly criticised Fuji star Taye Currency for what he described as “offensive and unrefined lyrics” during his performance at the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday.

A viral video from the event captured the singer using the Yoruba phrase “Were la fi n wo were,” which translates to “madness is cured with madness.”

In a statement issued on Saturday, Oba Tejuosho said the musician’s “careless performance” undermined the dignity and traditions of Yoruba culture, especially at an occasion as significant as a royal coronation.

He stressed that such ceremonies are not only historic but also deeply symbolic, representing grandeur, tradition and collective pride. According to him, “the throne of our ancestors is not a stage for mockery, nor should the coronation of a great monarch be trivialised.”

The monarch noted that music performed at a royal event should honour history, culture and authority. “Words must carry weight, rhythms should embody respect, and melodies must serve as vessels of dignity,” he said. “Anything less diminishes both the performer and the sanctity of the crown.”

Oba Tejuosho also questioned the organisers’ decision to invite Taye Currency for such a high-profile occasion, which was attended by dignitaries including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other prominent figures.

He added that many people invest heavily to secure performers such as King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey or Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate) for major events because of their ability to uphold decorum. He further suggested that if Oyo State had wanted to showcase local talent, artistes like Alhaji Rasheed Ayinde (Merenge) and other more reserved performers would have been more suitable for the ceremony.
