Fuji music legend Abass Akande Obesere was attacked by suspected hoodlums on Friday during a burial ceremony in Okitipupa, Ondo State.
The incident occurred at the Government Field in Okitipupa, where Obesere and his band were performing for guests at the event. Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the venue unexpectedly and disrupted the performance, causing panic among guests.
A witness, Mrs. Bosede Akinyemi, described the scene as chaotic and shameful. She said the hoodlums, known within the community, assaulted members of the band and damaged musical instruments believed to be worth millions of naira.
“They pounced on some of the band boys and destroyed the equipment,” she said, adding that one of the musicians was reportedly stabbed while trying to resist the attackers.
Efforts to reach Obesere for comment were unsuccessful.
The Chairman of Okitipupa Local Government Area, Hon. Andrew Ogunsakin, confirmed the attack and condemned the act of hooliganism. He described the incident as disgraceful and contrary to the values of the Ikale people.
Ogunsakin assured that the local authorities would take steps to prevent a recurrence and emphasized that his administration would not tolerate actions that threaten the peace of the community or harm entertainers and visitors. He also promised to personally reach out to Obesere to express regret over the incident.
