The Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland, Imam Yunus Olushina Teliat (Ayilara II), has dismissed allegations linking him to terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping, while calling on both the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government to intensify efforts to secure the release of abducted pupils and teachers in parts of Oyo State.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the cleric expressed deep concern over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers from Ahoro, Esin-Ele, and Yawota communities, describing the incident as painful and traumatic for the affected families and the wider community.
He said his prayers and sermons in recent weeks had focused on the victims and their safe return, noting that the suffering of the families had weighed heavily on him. The Islamic leader offered prayers for the abducted individuals and urged authorities to deploy all available resources to ensure their immediate and unconditional release.
Imam Teliat also commended security personnel involved in rescue operations, praising their commitment and sacrifices while praying for the success of their mission.
Addressing accusations circulating on social media, the cleric firmly denied having any connection with criminal groups. He stated that he has consistently condemned terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry in his public sermons and lectures, describing such acts as violations of Islamic teachings and crimes against humanity.
According to him, his religious and academic work has always promoted peace, justice, and respect for human life. He added that he has publicly supported strict legal punishment for individuals found guilty of terrorism and kidnapping as a deterrent against such crimes.
The Chief Imam further revealed that his legal team had begun taking action against individuals spreading what he described as false and defamatory allegations against him. He warned bloggers, vloggers, and social media users against associating his name with criminal activities without evidence.
He concluded by praying for lasting peace across Nigeria and for the safe return of all victims of terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
