Federal Government declares Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year public holidays
The Federal Government has announced Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, 2025, as public holidays to commemorate Christmas and Boxing Day. In addition, Thursday, January 1, 2026, has been declared a public holiday to mark the New Year.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
According to the statement, the minister urged Nigerians to reflect on the values of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice associated with the birth of Jesus Christ. He also encouraged citizens, regardless of religion or ethnic background, to use the festive period to pray for national peace, improved security, and overall development.
Tunji-Ojo further advised Nigerians to remain law-abiding and security-conscious throughout the celebrations. He extended goodwill messages to Christians in Nigeria and abroad, as well as to all citizens, wishing them a joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
The minister noted that the Christmas and New Year seasons offer an opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen unity, show compassion to one another, and renew their commitment to nation-building.
