Osogbo, Osun State – A tragic incident occurred on Friday at the Ummu Haani Adigun Memorial Central Mosque, located on B.A. Adigun Street, Ayedun Estate, Ogo Oluwa area, when a worshipper identified as Najeem was beaten to death following a confrontation with fellow congregants.
According to reports, the incident unfolded shortly after the dawn (Fajr) prayer when Najeem reportedly disrupted the sermon being delivered by the mosque’s imam. The precise reason for his actions remains unclear, but sources indicate that Najeem, a printer by profession, confronted the imam and allegedly threatened him before the cleric managed to leave the area safely.
Eyewitnesses revealed that Najeem pursued the imam outside the mosque, prompting other worshippers to intervene. The confrontation escalated into a physical altercation, which ultimately resulted in Najeem’s death.
An eyewitness, Jimoh, explained, “The deceased stood up during the sermon, removed the microphone stand, and attempted to attack the imam. The imam fled to avoid being harmed, but other worshippers tried to restrain him. The struggle quickly spilled outside the mosque, and during the commotion, he was beaten. Some say he died inside, while others report that he fell into a nearby gutter, which led to his death.”
The Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident, clarifying that the victim died outside the mosque premises. “The deceased’s body has been taken to the Osun State Teaching Hospital mortuary. The Divisional Police Officer and tactical teams are on site to maintain law and order,” he said.
Police investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the incident. No arrests have been made at this time.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed, emphasizing that the police are committed to ensuring justice and restoring peace within the community.
