A tragic event unfolded around 1:40 PM on Friday in Amudo Village, Ekwulobia, as a man allegedly murdered his mother and attempted to take his own life, according to a statement from Anambra State Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

The suspect, 49-year-old Nnamdi Anyaji, was arrested by operatives from the Anambra State Police Command for allegedly killing his 68-year-old mother, Mrs. Dorathy Anyaji. Officers from the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station responded promptly to a distress call and apprehended the suspect at the scene. An axe, believed to have been used in the incident, was recovered as evidence.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the altercation stemmed from a dispute over the profits of a cassava business, with the suspect accusing his mother of being dishonest about the earnings.

SP Ikenga noted that Anyaji is currently in police custody and under close supervision to prevent any further attempts at self-harm. He added that the suspect will face legal charges once the investigation is complete.

In a separate incident the same day, members of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad based in Enugu-Ukwu conducted a raid on a suspected drug hideout in Umuokpala Village, Orumba North Local Government Area.

Acting on reliable intelligence, officers arrested 12 young men alleged to be involved in the sale and use of illegal drugs. Items seized during the operation included quantities of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, various illicit substances, and other incriminating materials.

The individuals arrested, all males aged between 20 and 29, were identified as Ifeanyi Bernard, Emmanuel Ugwu, Thankgod Kelechi, Umeh Chidera, Aguiyi Onyeka, Onyeka Martin, Festus Ihezie, Chibundu Nicholas, Solomon Obiefule, Chibundu Daniel, Neke Shedrack, and Nwazufu Kingsley.

SP Ikenga confirmed that both the suspects and the recovered materials have been transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
