At least 17 farmers were reportedly killed and 13 others injured after armed bandits attacked farmlands in Goron Namaye, located in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The incident, which occurred on June 12, 2026, was disclosed by Amnesty International in a statement shared on its social media platform. The human rights organisation condemned the attack and criticised the Nigerian government over what it described as a failure to adequately protect citizens from escalating violence.
According to Amnesty International, the assailants stormed farming communities and opened attacks on residents working on their farmlands. The organisation expressed concern that recurring assaults by bandits and other armed groups continue to threaten lives and livelihoods, especially as the rainy season begins and farmers return to their fields.
The group argued that insecurity has made farming increasingly dangerous in Zamfara State, warning that the situation could worsen food production and deepen economic hardship in affected communities.
Amnesty International further stated that the continued attacks reflect shortcomings in the country’s security response, alleging that insufficient action has allowed criminal groups to operate with little fear of consequences. The organisation urged authorities to strengthen efforts to curb violence and improve protection for vulnerable rural populations.
The latest killings add to growing concerns about insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West region, where bandit groups have repeatedly carried out attacks, kidnappings, and other violent crimes despite ongoing military operations.
