The Nigeria Police Force has apprehended Igwe Gift Okechukwu, a fraudulent individual posing as a doctor, for engaging in a web of criminal activities, including organ trafficking, fraud, cybercrime, identity theft, and stealing. The arrest took place in Nasarawa State, following the suspect’s series of fraudulent acts in Owerri, Imo State. Operating under the alias Henry Ovie, the impostor managed to deceive a point of sale (POS) operator named Anita Chinwe Mathias, coercing her into inputting a code on her POS machine. This deceitful act led to the withdrawal of a total sum of twenty-one million naira (N21,000,000) from Mathias’s account, prompting her to file a police report. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, divulged the specifics of the arrest during a press briefing in Abuja. Adejobi detailed the suspect’s modus operandi, which involved building trust with the victim, transferring a substantial amount into her account, and later manipulating her into entering a code, facilitating the fraudulent withdrawal.Adejobi stated that the suspect operated under various identities and phone numbers, using aliases like Igwe Richard and Ovie Henry. Mathias, the complainant, recounted that on September 11, 2023, the imposter deceived her into entering a code on her POS machine, taking advantage of the trust she had placed in him.Subsequently, all the funds in her POS account, amounting to twenty million naira (N21,000,000), were withdrawn. Efforts to contact the suspect were futile, and upon verification at the Federal Medical Centre, where the suspect purportedly worked, it was revealed that no doctor by that name was employed there. Consequently, Mathias reported the case to the Force Criminal Investigation Department Abuja, prompting swift action from intelligence officers leading to the suspect’s arrest.Investigations exposed that the fake doctor changed his phone number and relocated from Owerri to Lafia, Nasarawa State, where he was eventually apprehended. Further discoveries indicated the suspect’s involvement in organ trafficking, linking him to a contact in Toronto, Canada. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reiterated the force’s dedication to combatting crimes and ensuring community safety. He assured Nigerians of an ongoing extensive investigation, promising that all perpetrators of this grave crime would face justice.
