Police officers involved in the shooting of vigilante members in Delta State have been detained, as confirmed by the Delta State Police Command. The officers allegedly shot a Vigilante Commander and two members of the Idjerhe Kingdom’s vigilante group in Jesse town on January 30, 2024. In response to public outcry, the state commissioner of police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, condemned the incident and ensured that the officers were identified and detained. CP Olufemi stated that the incident would be thoroughly investigated, emphasizing the commitment of the command to uphold justice. He directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a full-scale investigation into the matter. Additionally, internal disciplinary action has been initiated against the officers involved. CP Olufemi reiterated the command’s commitment to professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights, emphasizing that such conduct would not be tolerated. He urged the public to remain calm and assured them of justice. The arrest follows protests across Idjerhe Kingdom, with the victims currently receiving medical attention. Chief Onosia James Obriki, representing the community, called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of the involved officers.
