In a recent case heard at the Grade I Area Court in Dei-Dei, Abuja, Nasir Idris found himself facing serious repercussions for his actions. Charged with stealing a fan and a prayer mat from a mosque, Idris received a 15-month prison sentence. However, the court offered him an alternative: paying a fine of N50,000.
The incident unfolded when Ali Zuma apprehended Idris on March 17 and promptly handed him over to the police in Zuba, another area within the Federal Capital Territory. According to the prosecution led by Mr. Chinedu Ogada, Idris unlawfully entered the mosque premises in Dei-Dei and absconded with the fan and prayer mat. Fortunately, his theft was thwarted as he was caught red-handed in the act. During subsequent investigations, Idris openly admitted to the crime, further revealing a troubling pattern of previous convictions related to theft, having served prison sentences twice before.
Idris’ decision to plead guilty during the court proceedings and his plea for leniency underscored a sense of remorse. However, Judge Saminu Suleiman, presiding over the case, issued a stern warning to Idris, emphasizing the importance of reform and the necessity to abstain from criminal behavior in the future. This judgment reflects not only the severity of Idris’ actions but also the court’s commitment to upholding justice and deterring further criminal activity within the community.
