Sixteen lives were tragically lost on Tuesday evening when a commercial bus collided with the fence of Maduka University, Ekwegbe, along the Enugu-Opi-Nsukka road. The impact caused the 18-seater bus to erupt in flames, claiming the lives of 16 passengers. Two survivors are currently undergoing treatment in a nearby hospital.
According to Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the command, the accident involved a white Toyota Hummer bus with Bauchi State commercial registration number DAS 215 XA, bearing the inscription “Masha Allah.” Initial investigations suggest that the bus, traveling at high speed, lost control and crashed into the university’s fence before bursting into flames.
Prompt response from police officers, soldiers, and concerned citizens facilitated the rescue of two survivors, who were promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention. The bus, laden with edible vegetables, food items, and passengers’ belongings, was en route to Nsukka from the Enugu area, although its exact origin and destination remain unclear.
Despite the tragedy, authorities have managed to recover the belongings of the passengers with the assistance of the Igbo-Etiti Police Division.
