In a statement issued on Tuesday, Dele Oyewale, Head of Media & Publicity for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), revealed the arrest of Chima Anthony Nwigwe, who is suspected of leading a syndicate involved in bank hacking. Nwigwe was taken into custody along with three others: Effiong Victor Emmanuel, Mohammed Bello—who serves as the managing director of Downstone Ultimate Limited Mahmud—and Damian Ali. They are accused of conspiring to gain unauthorized access to bank computer systems and illegally withdrawing customers’ funds.
Oyewale disclosed that the arrests were made in Abuja during a sting operation, following credible intelligence linking the suspects to database breaches in commercial banks. The breaches allegedly enabled fraudulent transactions and withdrawals through multiple digital platforms.
He also confirmed that the suspects would be formally charged in court once investigations are concluded.
