A Catholic priest is reported to have fatally shot a young boy after the child set off fireworks during the New Year Mass on January 1, 2025, in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area, Imo State.
The incident took place within the church grounds, and the identity of the priest remains unknown. A Facebook post shared on Wednesday through the ‘For The Love Of Anambra’ page highlighted that the community has been left in shock and mourning. Many local residents are calling for a full investigation to uncover the details surrounding the tragic event.
The news has sparked strong reactions on social media.
One Facebook user, Buka Tee, wrote, “A thorough and transparent investigation must be conducted into this incident. It should not be swept under the rug. This is deeply concerning.”
Malachy Chukwunyereugo added, “He will likely face a lifetime in prison.”
Icha Joseph expressed, “The priest was acting in self-defense. Priests in the East are constantly at risk, so they cannot afford to be careless. Moreover, the Nigerian police should ban the use of dangerous fireworks, especially in times of increased insecurity.”
Steve Idealmann shared his perspective, stating, “It’s important not to judge the priest too harshly, considering the events I witnessed at my own church yesterday. People are becoming more erratic, and it’s troubling when fireworks are aimed at worshippers instead of being set off into the sky as they should. Parents need to have serious talks with their children because the situation is becoming intolerable.”
Another Facebook user, Elochukwu Obiegbu, raised a key question: “Who authorized the priest to carry a gun or issued him a license? That’s the first question that needs to be answered.”
