Residents of a Nottinghamshire town in England are baffled by a peculiar monthly ritual involving plates of peeled bananas being left by the roadside. This unusual activity has been happening for over a year.
Each month in 2024, on the second day, a plate of bananas appears at a street corner in Beeston, positioned across from a local church. The mystery began at the intersection of Abbey Road and Wensor Avenue and has continued without explanation.
Clare Short, a local resident, was the first to notice the pattern. She observed that the bananas consistently appeared on the same date each month. In an attempt to address the situation, she placed a sign at the location, stating: “Please, respectfully, no more bananas! The uncollected plates and rotting bananas leave such a mess. Wishing a happy new year to you all.”
However, despite the sign, a plate of bananas was still left on January 2nd.
Short expressed her confusion, telling the BBC, “I’ve asked around in the local community, but no one seems to know anything or offer any explanation.”
Speculation among residents has led to various theories. Some believe the bananas might be intended as food for wildlife, while others suspect they could be a religious offering, given the nearby church.
Short, who has come to accept the ritual, explained, “I’ve decided to take the signs down. I don’t want this to turn into a dispute or make it a bigger issue. It seems to hold some special meaning for someone, and I wish them well. But it would be wonderful if they could return a few days later to clean up the mess.”
