The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the fatal attack on an officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by armed internet fraudsters in Anambra State, leaving another officer critically injured.
According to DriveTV News, the attack occurred on Friday during an EFCC operation targeting suspected cybercriminals, commonly referred to as “Yahoo Boys.” The team, which had traveled from their zonal headquarters in Enugu, came under sudden gunfire, forcing them to retreat.
The deceased officer, an assistant superintendent, had recently passed a promotional examination, while the injured officer remains hospitalized in critical condition as of Friday night.
In response to the incident, an EFCC officer, speaking anonymously, revealed concerns about the lack of life insurance and compensation for families of fallen officers, a practice reportedly discontinued since the tenure of former EFCC Chairperson Farida Waziri. “The families of the officer who died today won’t be getting anything. Can we say he died for nothing?” the officer lamented.
The Anambra State Police Command Spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack and stated that investigations are ongoing. “The suspect is in custody, and the firearm has been recovered. Further details will be communicated,” Ikenga told Daily Trust.
