The Christian Association of Nigeria has strongly condemned the recent attack on a church in Ekiti State, where a pastor was killed and several worshippers were abducted.
In a statement released by its president, Daniel Okoh, the organisation described the incident as disturbing and a clear sign of worsening insecurity across the country.
According to reports, armed men stormed a religious gathering in Eda Oniyo, opening fire on worshippers, killing the pastor and taking several others into captivity.
CAN expressed deep concern over the attack, stressing that people who gathered peacefully to worship were met with violence. The group described the incident not only as an attack on a church but also as a violation of human dignity and the sanctity of life.
The association extended condolences to the family of the slain cleric and showed solidarity with the victims and the Christian community in Ekiti State. It also called for the immediate and safe release of those abducted.
The organisation warned that such incidents reflect a growing pattern of violence affecting communities and places of worship. It noted that similar attacks have occurred in other parts of the country, raising concerns about the safety of citizens.
CAN urged the government and security agencies to act swiftly by arresting those responsible and ensuring justice is served. It also called for increased security presence in vulnerable areas, especially rural communities, and improved intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks.
The group emphasised that no Nigerian should live in fear or face danger while practising their faith, adding that places of worship must never become targets for criminals.
It concluded by urging both authorities and citizens to take collective responsibility in addressing insecurity, while praying for the safe return of those abducted and peace across the nation.
