The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three individuals in connection with the suspicious death of a 71-year-old cleric, Elder Omotayo Fajana, in Akungba-Akoko.
Fajana, a member of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, had travelled to Akungba-Akoko in Akoko South-West Local Government Area for a church event where he was expected to be installed as the Baba Aladura of Ogo Orimolade Cherubim and Seraphim Church.
The incident sparked controversy after reports emerged that the cleric’s body was removed from a hotel room and taken to a mortuary in Ikare-Akoko without confirmation of death by a qualified medical practitioner.
Concerned about the circumstances surrounding his uncle’s death, the deceased’s nephew, Olaseni Sunday Olaoluwa, reported the matter to the Akungba Police Division and requested a detailed investigation.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, stated that the command had launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
According to the police, preliminary findings suggest that some church officials and hotel workers may have moved the deceased’s body to a mortuary before obtaining the required medical certification.
Jimoh disclosed that three suspects have been taken into custody and are currently assisting investigators as detectives work to establish whether any foul play was involved.
He further revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, has directed a thorough and discreet investigation into the matter to uncover all relevant facts.
The police assured members of the public that anyone found responsible for wrongdoing during the investigation would face prosecution in accordance with the law.
