The Nigeria Police Force in Sokoto State has reassured residents that adequate security measures are in place following reports circulating on social media about a planned protest linked to the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran.

The demonstration is reportedly being organised by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly referred to as Shiite members. The group had earlier held a peaceful procession on Sunday to protest the attack on Iran and the reported killing of their leader.

Speaking on Friday, the spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said the police became aware of the planned protest through posts circulating on social media.

He explained that the command had already taken proactive steps to prevent the situation from escalating into violence or any form of unlawful activity. According to him, security officials are closely monitoring developments and engaging relevant stakeholders to ensure that any demonstration remains peaceful if it eventually takes place.

Rufai added that organisations intending to hold protests in the state typically notify the police beforehand. This allows security authorities to provide guidance on how such processions should be conducted without disrupting public order.

He noted that the police usually advise organisers on the appropriate procedures to follow to ensure demonstrations remain orderly and do not lead to chaos.

The police also appealed to residents not to panic, assuring them that security agencies are fully prepared to maintain peace and stability across the state.

According to the spokesperson, the command has directed residents to continue their daily activities without fear, stressing that measures are already in place to protect lives and property.

Concerns had earlier grown among residents after reports of the planned protest circulated online, raising fears that tensions could escalate.

However, the police reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order while also ensuring that lawful and peaceful activities are not obstructed.
