The Osun State Police Command has arrested two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service in connection with a shooting that resulted in the death of a driver in Osogbo.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday in the Dada Estate area of the state capital.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, the suspects have been identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel.

Preliminary reports indicated that the officers were pursuing vehicles suspected to be carrying foreign-used (tokunbo) cars when the shooting occurred.

Police officers responding to the report quickly moved to the scene and arrested the two Customs personnel. During the incident, the driver of an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla, one of the vehicles reportedly being chased, was shot. He was later confirmed dead by a doctor at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.

The body of the victim, whose identity had not yet been established at the time of the report, has been deposited in a morgue.

Authorities also recovered several items from the scene, including a Beretta pistol with breech number 125024, eleven rounds of 9mm live ammunition, a spent 9mm shell casing, a white Toyota Corolla with Lagos registration number AAA 400 GQ, and an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla with registration number GFQ 0982.

Police said the suspects are currently in custody while investigations continue. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered a full investigation to determine exactly how the incident occurred.

Earlier reports indicated that the shooting took place along the Osogbo–Iwo Road near the Onibueja community around 10 a.m.

A resident identified simply as Sunday claimed that the victim was driving from the Iwo end of the road toward Osogbo when security operatives, reportedly dressed in plain clothes, opened fire on his vehicle.

According to the witness, the driver died behind the steering wheel, while the car was riddled with bullets before residents rushed to the scene.

The police command assured members of the public that anyone found responsible will face the full weight of the law and urged residents to remain calm while cooperating with investigators.
