A student identified as Maryam, who was abducted by bandits several months ago while travelling to continue her education, has regained her freedom after spending a long period in captivity.
Maryam was reportedly kidnapped while journeying from Zamfara State to Sokoto State when armed attackers intercepted her and took her to an undisclosed location.
News of her release emerged on Wednesday through a social media update by a blogger, who confirmed that she is now safe and receiving care after her ordeal.
In a video shared after her release, Maryam was seen inside a vehicle on her way to a hospital for medical attention. Appearing weak but relieved, she expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their prayers and support during her time in captivity.
She acknowledged that the encouragement and concern shown by the public gave her strength and hope throughout the difficult experience.
Her release comes amid ongoing security challenges in parts of Nigeria, where incidents of banditry and kidnappings remain frequent. Several states, including Katsina State, Kebbi State, and Kwara State, have continued to experience attacks by armed groups targeting travellers, communities, and institutions.
Residents in affected areas have repeatedly raised concerns over the rising insecurity, calling for stronger measures to protect lives and property.
