President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of soldiers during a terrorist attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State.

In a statement issued through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the fallen troops as “unforgettable heroes” and extended his condolences to the armed forces and the families of those who lost their lives.

The attack targeted troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation Hadin Kai. According to the Defence Headquarters, the assault took place in the early hours of Thursday and resulted in multiple casualties.

Tinubu praised the soldiers for their bravery, noting that they fought hard to repel the attackers and prevent them from overrunning nearby communities. He added that their sacrifice would always be remembered.

The President also noted that ongoing military operations have dealt significant blows to insurgents, suggesting that the recent attack may reflect desperation on the part of the attackers.

He sympathised with the families of the deceased soldiers, including those led by Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, who died in the line of duty while defending the country.

Encouraging members of the armed forces, Tinubu urged them to remain steadfast and not lose morale despite the incident. He called on them to continue serving with courage, discipline, and patriotism.

The President further assured that the Federal Government would continue to support the military by providing necessary equipment and prioritising the welfare of personnel.

He also appealed to Nigerians and the media to support the armed forces and avoid actions or narratives that could undermine their efforts, emphasising that the fallen soldiers should be honoured and remembered.

Tinubu extended his condolences to the government and people of Borno State, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to achieving lasting peace and defeating insurgency in the North-East.

The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region, where troops have been battling insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP for several years. Reports indicate that the assault led to the death of Brigadier-General Braimah and several soldiers, with significant damage recorded at the military base.
