Suspected kidnappers holding eight worshippers in Kwara State have reduced their ransom demand from ₦1 billion to ₦150 million, as concern grows over the victims’ continued detention.

The victims were abducted on March 22 during a church service in Omugo community, located in the Oro-Ago area of Ifelodun Local Government Area. The incident has since created widespread fear, forcing many residents to abandon their homes.

A community representative, Jimoh Olaitan, disclosed the revised ransom while speaking to journalists in Ilorin. He explained that although the kidnappers lowered their demand, the amount remains far beyond what the victims’ families and the community can afford.

He described the situation as distressing, noting that relatives of the abducted individuals are overwhelmed and unable to raise such a large sum.

Olaitan also revealed that the security situation in Omugo has deteriorated significantly since the attack, with many residents fleeing for safety. According to him, the community is now largely deserted, with only local vigilantes and hunters staying behind to guard abandoned properties.

He expressed concern over the absence of security personnel at the local police post, warning that the lack of officers has made the area more vulnerable to further attacks.

Calling for urgent intervention, Olaitan appealed to both the federal and state governments, as well as security agencies, to take decisive action to secure the release of the victims.

He emphasised the need for a coordinated rescue operation involving all levels of government and security forces, stressing that delays could worsen the situation.

In addition, he urged authorities to strengthen security in the area by deploying personnel, activating the existing police post, and establishing a permanent Joint Task Force base.

Olaitan further suggested that local hunters and vigilantes, who are familiar with the terrain, should be integrated into formal security efforts to enhance protection and prevent future incidents.
